Title:
2nd grade Number Patterns
Subject:
Math
Grade:
2
Time Frame:
90 minute lesson
Summary:
Students will use patterns to solve real life situations. Students will use patterns to describe relationships and make predictions on a hundreds chart.
Tasks:
  1. Place students in groups of 4.
  2. Display a 100s Chart for the class to see. Facilitate a discussion to review place value patterns in a 100s chart.
  3. Instruct students to look for repeating and additive patterns in the 100s chart. Allow time for students to discuss the patterns that can be found in a 100s chart with their group. Facilitate a class discussion about the patterns found.
    Ask:
  • What pattern(s) and pattern types can be found in the place values going across the rows of a 100s chart?
  • What pattern(s) and pattern types can be found in the place values going down the columns of a 100s chart?
4. Display the website: Displaying Number Patterns
  • As a whole class: invite students to discuss and predict what number will come next on the pattern you have started.
  • How did you figure out the pattern?
5. Once students have discussed their predictions and findings on the hundred chart, students will then get back into their groups and create a spread sheet on Body Parts given the model on the Activeboard.
6. Students will discuss:
  • How many eyes does one person have? 2 people.....8 people
  • How many toes does 1 person have on 1 foot? 2 people...8 people
  • How many toes does 1 person have on 2 feet? 2 people...8 people
Objectives:
  • Given a hundreds chart, TLW recognize and describe patterns on a hundreds chart and create a pattern table on body parts. (eyes, toes on 1 foot, toes on 2 feet)
Assessment:
Students will be assessed by creating a pattern chart on body parts
Resources:
  • Activeboard
  • IPads
